“He did not!” said Charlie in a scandalized tone.
“Uh-huh,” said Tommy. “He did too.”
“No way,” butted in Colby. “NFW!”
Tommy sat back, folded his arms, and insisted: “Fell had lace curtains in his cabin when I lived with him.”
“I never saw them,” said Charlie.
“I put them up,” said Tommy. “From his Mom’s trunk. Lovely Irish lace.”
“Oh for a day!” said Laurie. “I bet they came down as soon as he saw them.”
“Nope. He liked them.”
Charlie, Laurie, and Colby shook their heads adamantly.
“Cross my heart!” said Tommy. “He had none when I moved in, so I put up the ones in the trunk that he rescued from when his cousin Jack brought over his dad’s clear out. He was kinda pissed with me, but they were his mom’s and he figured we were private.”
“No!” said Charlie. “No way. I bet he nailed up his old plaid shirts.”
Colby snorted. “Oh come on. Fell wears his shirts until they fall apart. He wouldn’t let a “perfectly good” shirt be used as a window treatment!”
All the boys reflected, then nodded solemnly about Fell’s thrifty ways.
“Honest,” said Tommy. “We only changed out his Mom’s lace when it got colder and I made him new ones that insulated better.”
“So,” challenged Charlie, “What were the new curtains made from?”
“Camouflage!” giggled Colby.
“Potato sacks,” suggested Laurie.
“Ooooh,” crowed Charlie. “Pleather!”
Tommy scowled. “No!”
“Gingham,” squealed Charlie.
“Academic-tweed jacket,” said Colby.
“Oh, for Fell’s sake,” snapped Tommy. “You’ve all seen them.”
All the boys blinked and blanked.
Then all shook their heads.
“Honest, Tommy, it’s a mystery. What does Dr. Fell have as curtains in the cabin?”
